"Sustainability planning means using a different and more comprehensive lens for economic development," asserts Susan Smith, the Executive Director of the Columbia Valley Chamber of Commerce. Smith is one of the sixteen CSAT - Community Sustainability Action Team - members of Imagine Invermere, the community's long-range integrated sustainability plan. The CSAT dedicated their time over six intensive months to help create the vision for a successful and sustainable Invermere, and to determine a number of priority actions that community organizations, businesses and the municipality need to take in order to move their community towards its desired future.

Municipal + First Nations Joint Sustainability Planning

Joint sustainability planning – what’s that about?

The Centre is working with FCM to promote joint community sustainability plans between municipalities and First Nations local governments as part of FCM's Community Infrastructure Partnership Program (CIPP). The CIPP is designed to create partnerships between municipalities and First Nations communities so they can develop and share infrastructure such as waste water treatment facilities in order to reduce costs.

Lil'wat Community Energy Baseline Project

The Centre worked with the Lil’wat First Nation to create a Community Energy Baseline, identifying potential energy efficiency and sustainable supply measures, and acting as the basis for future energy projects in the community.
